Claying in the car

My hubby is with our oldest son in Europe right now.  They are taking a two-week tour of France, Italy, Switzerland, and Germany.  His flight was scheduled for Tuesday of this week – I’m off work from my day job on Tuesdays, but normally I need to work at my clay on my days off.  It’s a 3 hour drive up to Chicago, which would have been alot of missed production hours.  So I improvised.

Our minivan has removable middle chairs.  One of them was already out, because we need the space to put my booth equipment in it’s place.  Where the chair would normally have been, I put my collapsable Rubbermaid table.  (Have I mentioned those tables before?  Worth every penny!  Available at Wal-Mart, adjusts to 3 heights, and folds up like an ironing board.)

I clamped my pasta machine to the table, put my non-skid mat under my work surface, and went to work on getting some blends made.  It was very productive time – I made 4 blends for upcoming canes and a half-pound rose cane for nail art.  The table was amazingly steady even with the pasta machine cranking away.  Here’s a picture Margo took of me in the van as we were preparing to leave.  My family thought I was clever, but crazy, to do this.

Love it! Absolutely, love it! You made my day with this post. What dedication. Now, to convince my husband this is how all our future trips need to be setup.

only you Cat only you. I was trying to figure out how the heck you were going to do it and there ya are. Goofball extraordinaire!

  • Unbeliveable! I did not think that it could be done. LOL
The crazy thing I did while driving in the car was crossstitchig. I did not consider it crazy because I had a deadline and I had to work but noticed few very confused faces in cars driving by.

Makes me feel good to know that I am not the only one who does stuff like this!!! I didn’t have a collapsible table, but I used a piece of plywood, and put it across the seats in front of me. Hey – make use of the time and space you’ve got!!!

  • Yep. You’re a living legend. Totally.

Get “You know who” to run a 12Volt adapter to your pasta machine!!!

    (:

What a great idea, Wes! I am adding that to my list to get. Now, we need to totally refit a panel van to make fully mobile clay studio. Hmm….. got to talk to the hubby.

  • Cat, I just love this!! just made me smile, and note – you are very clever!!

  • Okay… I have to ask… ahem… were you buckled in???

Sigh. It’s a great idea, if you were buckled up ;)
