About Fimo Nail Art

Fimo is a brand name of polymer clay.  It is the primary brand we use, mainly for it’s firmness, baked strength, and ability to hold a shape without distortion.  Polymer clay that is formed into a cane does not look like a walking cane.  It looks more like a log of cookie dough that has  a picture built into the log of dough.  Polymer clay canes are made the same way the log of cookie dough is made.  (Click here to see how a cane is made.)

Our Fimo nail art canes handmade from start to finish.  They start large but are reduced in size by squeezing and stretching, until they are a diameter between 1/8 inch (3 mm) and 1/2-inch (14 mm).  Even though the size is very small, the designs are perfectly visible, as you can see by the tiny slice of blue hibiscus flower shown on the nail .

A very sharp blade is needed to slice the canes.  Our Fimo nail art canes do not need to be warmed before slicing them.  We carry a great little 4-inch (10cm) cane slicing blade.  These blades are stiff and very sharp, perfect for cutting both raw and baked canes.  We use them in our studio and in our classes.  You can find the blades in any of our online nail art shops.  We also offer the blades with a handle that makes the blade more comfortable to use while slicing: Comfort-Grip Blades.  These blades were featured in the Technique section of the August 2009 issue of Nails Magazine.

Fimo Nail Art is completely non-toxic and conforms to ASDM D 4326.  You can read the MSDS form here.  Slices of these Fimo nail art canes get encased between the layers of acrylic or gel nail enhancement.  They can be used with nail polish, though an acrylic-based polish must be used; enamel based polishes react unfavorably with the polymer clay, causing the clay to become pitted.

Our Fimo nail art canes are 2 inches in length (5cm) and can produce between 100 and 150 slices, depending on how thick you slice.  Ideally, the slices should be approximately 1/32-inch (.5mm).  Partial slices work fine on edges, and thicker slices can be filed down before encasing them with gel or acrylic.  The key to good slicing is to go slow and slice in one direction, rather than rapid sawing back and forth.  We have a YouTube video showing how to slice the canes:  view video.

If you would rather not slice the canes yourself, we carry the designs pre-sliced.  These are convenient and save you time.  There are two ways you can purchase the slices:  the first way is in a small package of 25 slices per package.  You can buy just one design, or an assortment with 4 slices of six different designs.   The second way is in a nail art wheel with an assortment of 144 slices,  with 10 slices of each design.  Both kinds of slices can be found in our nail art shop, etsy shop, and ebay store.  These are very convenient and save time.

You can also use our RAW canes in nail art.  Raw is the way the clay starts out – soft and pliable.  It gives you ultimate control of the size and shape of the fimo nail art you are using.  Whether freeform or free edge, raw fimo is one of our most popular items.  You can find our RAW animal print canes in our fimo nail art shop, etsy shop, and ebay store.  The package comes with instructions (please note, raw fimo is not for use with nail polish).
